What is a SMS?

A Safety Management System (or SMS) is a systematic approach to managing safety. By following established policies, practices and procedures you ensure the safety of vessels, environment, crew and passengers.

All domestic commercial vessels must have a SMS that demonstrates and documents how your vessel meets the mandatory requirements of Marine Order 504.

Your vessel’s SMS should be based on a risk assessment of your operations. It should describe how safety, maintenance and operation is managed on your vessel.

Safety Afloat can assist you in preparing your SMS and drafting up a Risk Assessment for your business.

Who Needs an SMS?

All Domestic Commercial vessels in Australia are required to have a documented SMS under Marine Order 504.

The Owner, Operator, Master, and Crew of each vessel share responsibilities for the vessel’s safety. All should be involved in carrying out the risk assessment and in developing, reviewing and updating the safety management system.

Marine Order 504 provides the SMS requirements for Class 1 to 4 vessels.

Safety Afloat specialises in creating clear, concise and thorough SMS documentation that complies with all AMSA requirements for every class of vessel.

What are the benefits of a SMS?

The majority of incidents onboard a vessel occur because of human error.

A good SMS can reduce accidents and incidents and result in:

  • Improved safety culture
  • Improved safety performance
  • Improved operational reliability
  • Safeguarding reputation
  • Compliance with legal requirements.
